25 July, 20002.730 mine workers in China have been killed so far only this year.

CHINA: Accidents in dangerous mines in China killed 2,730 miners in the first half of 2000. According to news reports, the government has renewed serious calls for the immediate improvement of industrial safety.
The death toll for 2000, is still 8 per cent lower than the casualty count from the first half of 1999. Although the number of overall deaths reportedly declined, accidents in smaller mines have doubled.
The reports claimed that rapid development and poorly funded local governments have contributed to the decline in safety standards. Authorities will close those mines which cannot meet the safety standards.
