14 February, 2001Following the failure of COP6 last November, discussions will resume this summer.
GLOBAL: A continuation of the climate change talks is set for this summer. The announcement comes from Jan Pronk, the Netherlands' environment minister, who presided over the failed discussions which took place in the Hague in November 2000 -- COP6 (the Sixth Session of the Conference of the Parties). The resumed talks will last for two weeks, some time between mid-June and the end of July 2001, with venue and exact dates to be published soon.
The decision to reconvene the meeting seems to reflect the strong commitment of the membership of the U.N. Climate Change Convention to implement the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
