21 July, 1999Canadian Auto Workers union begins bargaining with General Motors on a new three-year contract.
CANADA: The talks with GM are the first in the CAW's round of negotiations on new three-year contracts with the Big Three North American automakers in Canada. Key issues are pensions, wage increases and the relationship between GM and its outside non-union suppliers, for instance Magna International Inc, with 25 per cent of the Canadian parts market.
"There is an equal responsibility on the auto parts makers not to use the millions they make to take away the democratic rights of workers," CAW President Buzz Hargrove said to the press.
Negotiators have September 21 as a strike deadline. One of the Big Three automakers -- GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler - will be chosen as a target by September 10.
