The challenge for trade unions in Africa is huge. Forty percent of the continent's population survives on less than two dollars a day. Unity of workers is the key to building strong unions capable of tackling the challenges of poverty.
Swaziland Amalgamated Trade Union is one example of IMF's work to build strong, self-reliant unions. The union was created when several smaller Swaziland unions were assisted by the IMF to merge. Covering five sectors, SATU is a stronger organization able to deliver gains for members and the community.
SATU continues to grow. Now the union can coordinate campaigns and lead strikes against foreign companies.
