SWITZERLAND: Congratulations are in order for Christiane Brunner, president of the IMF-affiliated Industry, Construction and Services Trade Union (SMUV/FTMH), who was elected by acclamation to lead the Swiss Socialist Party, at its Congress in Lugano last weekend.
The new party president, who has a law degree, is a well-known trade unionist and member of the Swiss Senate, was roundly praised for the qualities she will bring to her new post. Party members say she is "close to the people, a tireless worker, a model of efficiency in Parliament, and has unlimited tenacity -- especially when dealing with adversaries."
Speaking to the Congress upon her election, Brunner stated that there was no question of the party taking a political turn towards the center. "The Socialist Party became strong as a party of the Left," she declared. "Let's leave the Center to those who want it... Our party's responsibility is to make Switzerland more social."
The SMUV/FTMH will be holding a Congress on October 27-28, in Fribourg, at which a new president of the trade union will be elected to replace Christiane Brunner.
