29 June, 2000The ILO's office in Moscow reports an official trade union complaint against the Belarus government.
BELARUS: The Belarusian Automobile and Agricultural Machinery Workers' Union (BAAMWU), the Belarusian Radio-Electronic Industry Workers' Union (BREIWU), the Belarusian Agricultural Sector Workers' Union and the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions have registered an official complaint with the International Labour Organisation against the Belarusian government. The trade unions' complaint is in regard to violation of fundamental workers' rights in their country.
According to the ILO office in Moscow, the Presidium of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus decided unanimously on June 27 to support and join this complaint, with which all Belarusian trade unions are now associated.
The BAAMWU and the BREIWU are affiliated at international level to the International Metalworkers' Federation.
In a show of solidarity with the Belarusian trade union movement, and to officially launch an international campaign, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, based in Brussels, is organising an ICFTU delegation to Minsk on July 11-12.
