AUSTRALIA: The IMF-affiliated Australian Workers' Union is involved in an Australia-wide struggle with the transnational glass company Pilkingtons. The dispute, over the company's attack on wages and its anti-union attitude, covers three major sites in the country. More than 400 workers have downed their tools.
Pilkingtons has taken on scab workers during the strike, which has so far lasted three weeks, with no end in sight. The company is now threatening to close all its Australian operations and says it will import glass from non-union plants in China.
