17 October, 1999French metal union says that the French-German alliance represented by this merger is the beginning of a greater European cooperation.
FRANCE: The French metalworkers' union FGMM-CFDT has reacted positively to the giant merger in the aerospace industry between France's Aerospatiale Matra SA and Germany's DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG. The newly-formed company, named the European Aeronautic, Defense & Space Co. (EADS), will be Europe's biggest aerospace concern and the third largest in the world.
In a press release issued on October 15, the union hailed the formation of a European aeronautic, defense and space company. After the major step of creating a single European currency - the Euro - in the construction of Europe, the FGMM-CFDT declared that this merger constitutes another major act. The union said, however, that to make this new alliance a positive opportunity for everyone, especially for the workers, the necessary means for research and development must be commensurate with the new projects to be undertaken.
The FGMM-CFDT will do its utmost so that jobs, the status of workers and the industrial set-up be the winners in this process, and that this would also be the objective of European metal trade union organisations.
The European Metalworker's Federation, which is organising a meeting for its affiliates on aeronautical questions on October 25-26, will analyse this new development and make proposals for trade union demands at European level.
