Some 6,000 South African tyre and rubber workers returned to work this morning after a four-week strike.

Yesterday, they agreed to accept an industry-wide package that includes a guaranteed 8 percent pay rise across the board this year. In years 2 and 3 of the three-year deal, pay will go up by 1 percent more than consumer price inflation.

The outcome was hailed as "a great victory" by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA).

The union blamed employer "ill will" for prolonging the dispute unnecessarily."The strike could have long ended if the talks were based on fairness, transparency and proper vision," NUMSA said. "We hope that in future, wage negotiations will be mutually beneficial and balanced in the interest of the industry."

NUMSA's tyre and rubber membership is affiliated to the 20-million-strong International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM).
