IndustriALL is a global trade union federation with 550 affiliates in 130 countries, representing over 50 million workers, including in the mining, energy, and manufacturing sectors. IndustriALL focuses on building union power all over the world through organizing and campaigning, fighting for an economic and social model that puts people first, based on democracy and social justice.
The IndustriALL Southeast Asia office in Malaysia is one of five regional offices, covering Southeast and East Asia, as well as the Pacific. IndustriALL is looking for a regional cross-sectoral issues (1) and policy officer in the region. The position will be supervised by IndustriALL’s regional secretary.
This full-time position is based in Malaysia, with some travel required, particularly in the region covered by the office.
The main tasks will be:
Cross sectoral issues
- Organizing and coordinating the IndustriALL’s cross-sectoral work in the South-East Asia region
- Working with the IndustriALL directors for sectors and cross-sectors, acting as the responsible
- person for the IndustriALL cross-sectoral activities in the region
- Maintaining day-to-day contacts with the affiliates related to cross-sectoral issues in the region,
- including offering policy and advocacy advice, research as well as practical assistance to ensure
- that cross-sectoral activities’ plans are discussed, agreed and implemented for all activities
- Looking for possible synergies between sectors and cross-sectoral matters
- Assisting, when necessary, various project teams and the donour organisations, as well as trade
- unions in donour countries, proactively dealing with both general and detailed project issues that
- concern both
- Coordinating cross-sectoral activities
- Participating in, as well as organising and preparing national / regional trade union activities as
- required
- Ensuring, together with the sectoral directors and regional officer of sectors, international level
- support to unions involved in the cross- sectoral activities
- Writing, producing and/or distributing materials and publications for use in the cross-sectoral
- activities
- Developing online tools for the cross-sectoral work
Policy
- Developing strategy and actions in line with IndustriALL’s Global Action Plan, regional priorities and strategic planning and cross-sectoral matters
- Ensuring practical organisation of meetings, developing agendas, and communicating with affiliates
- Keeping regular contact with affiliates, conducting surveys, and arranging exchanges among the affiliates
Other tasks
- Assisting in conducting workshops and seminars as required
- Any other work as assigned by the regional secretary
Requirements
- Wide experience in trade union matters in the region
- A good understanding of the trade union movement and trade union experience in South-
- East Asian countries
- At least five years experiences in industrial policy that covers broad cross-sectoral related matters
- in trade union movement
- The ability to undertake cross- sectoral policy research
- Excellent communication skills, written as well as oral
- Willingness and being available to travel, as the position would require some travel in the countries
- covered by the South-East Asia office
- The ability to deliver tasks on time, as well as to multi-task
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, both in the regional office as
- well as with the head office in Geneva
- Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English. Good knowledge of one or more South-
- East Asian languages is an advantage.
- IT skills: Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), internet browser, social
- media, video communication tools
Salary and benefits
Salary, worktime, health and travel insurance, pension, medical reimbursement, skills improvement package, and other benefits will be in line with IndustriALL’s regional framework agreement.
