21 February, 2013SINTRAEMCOCABLES, the union representing workers at the Colombian steel cables company, Emcocables S.A., is demanding a 5.75% pay rise. The company is offering 4.5%.
The company is now refusing to negotiate with the union over its list of demands. The union also says that the company harasses union members and leaders.
By refusing to negotiate, the company is violating the worker’s fundamental rights, which are officially recognised in Colombia and internationally. In response, IndustriALL Global Union in Colombia and other international trade unions have written letters of protest to company management calling for the company to comply with Colombian legislation and demanding that it begins direct negotiations with the union as soon as possible.
Emcocables S.A. produces industrial inputs, mainly steel cables.
