26 July, 2000Mozambique's main labour union called off plans for a national strike on Wednesday after a deal with government late on Tuesday

MOZAMBIQUE: Mozambique's largest trade union federation, the Mozambican Workers' Organization (OTM) called off the three-day strike after the government agreed to a 26 per cent increase in the minimum wage, upping its previous offer of 16 per cent. The last minute deal is a victory for the union which had demanded 30 per cent.
If the strike had gone ahead it would have been the first since country attained independence from Portuguese rule in 1974. It would have been the first in a series of actions and the employers were very concerned about the possible effects of a strike.
The OTM has about 250,000 members.
