Scab workers at Joy

13 September, 2000The IMF is stepping up its campaign in support of workers at Joy Mining Machinery, Australia.

GENEVA: In a letter to IMF affiliates, Marcello Malentacchi, IMF general secretary, has requested strong support for the campaign of solidarity with locked-out workers at the Joy Mining Machinery company in Moss Vale, Australia.
Joy management has insisted on the introduction of four separate agreements, in place of the previously-existing single company agreement, and threatened to close the plant unless the workers agree to its demands.
After five months of fruitless negotiations, the workers established a peaceful picket line outside the plant. The company has now hired scab workers, bussing in people from outside the region, to enter the workplace and break the picket line.
Malentacchi writes: "Please support our campaign to defend trade union rights in Australia by writing strong letters of complaint to protest the company's undemocratic actions at the Moss Vale plant, which are a clear breach of basic trade unions rights."
