"Release Mun Sung-Hyun"

5 December, 2001The Norwegian Nobel Committee should use its authority to persuade the Korean goverment to release the imprisoned KMWF president, says Marcello Malentacchi in an open letter.

GENEVA: A year ago, when the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Price to Kim Dae Jung, president of South Korea, he pledged that he would give the rest of his life to "human rights and peace" in his country.
Looking at the policy persued by Mr. Kim since he took office in 1997, this pledge sounds hollow, says IMF general secretary, Marcello Malentacchi, in an open letter to the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee:
"Imprisonment has been used as a means to stifle workers' demands for alternatives to the IMF-inspired structural adjustment programmes carried out by the government. The sentencing and imprisonment of Mr. Mun Sung-Hyun, the President of the Korean Metal Workers' Federation (KMWF) a few days ago in Seoul is new evidence of the government strong anti-union stance and ruthless labour policies."
We therefore appeal to this Committee to use its authority and good offices to persuade the Korean government to release the President of KMWF, Mr. Mun Sung-Hyun, and all trade unionists, says Marcello Malentacchi.
