5 October, 1999GWU's members who went on strike at Malta's airport in August are asked to return to work.

MALTA: The General Workers' Union has informed the IMF that, following their legitimate strike on August 20 at Malta International Airport and the suspension from work of their members in the fire section, all workers have been asked to report back to their jobs.
During the industrial action, strikers were not only brutally attacked by police and military but also arrested and questioned at police headquarters. Upon their release, they were ordered to stay home on full pay until a magistrate's inquiry was concluded. The employer has said that even though the workers have been asked to report back to their jobs, this does not preclude further measures being taken against them in the future.
Meanwhile, the GWU, which is facing a number of court cases submitted during and after the dispute, says that it is still attempting to resolve with the airport the question of recognition and that it will defend its own rights as well as those of its members in whichever way necessary.
Earlier news items concerning the strike in Malta can be found in the IMF website news archives for August 23 and 30.
