It's time for European unions to act

25 October, 2000A truly unified, social Europe must have a strong European trade union movement, but be part of the global discussion as well.

GENEVA: Replying, in his latest opinion column, to a question addressed to the IMF via its website, Marcello Malentacchi, IMF general secretary, summarises significant contributions made by the International Metalworkers' Federation towards achieving a truly unified, social Europe.
Although there are organisations at European level more competent to act on this issue, plus the fact that the IMF deals with metalworkers at worldwide level, it is obvious, states Malentacchi, that what happens in Europe is also extremely important for the rest of the world, thus the IMF's great involvement.
Clearly, the changing traditional role of the European nation, ultimately to be replaced by international organisations acting at continental level, means that the role of the trade unions must also adjust and become more global. European unions must decide how to build up a strong European movement and, says Malentacchi, the IMF's role is "to make sure this element forms an integral part of the global discussion."
