19 February, 2001After Italian carmaker announces mass dismissals at its plant in Poland, IMF requests they rescind their decision.

POLAND/ITALY: The general secretary of the International Metalworkers' Federation, Marcello Malentacchi, has written a letter of protest to top management of Fiat Spa, in Turin, Italy, concerning the dismissal of 750 workers at the Italian carmaker's plant in Bielsko Biala, Poland.
In his letter addressed to Fiat president, Paolo Cantarella, Malentacchi remarked that he was "once again compelled to write concerning Fiat's industrial relations practices," noting that the workers were dismissed without proper notification or negotiations with their trade union, NSZZ Solidarnosc, an affiliate at international level of the IMF.
"To pursue dismissals in such a manner is unacceptable in this day and age," declared the IMF general secretary, "and I ask you to rescind the announcement and immediately begin negotiations in good faith with our affiliate."
Fiat made known its unilateral decision for the mass dismissals on February 6.
