Demonstration in Belarus

19 February, 20019,000 workers take part in a protest meeting in Minsk.

BELARUS: Under the slogan "Raise wages up to the level of prices," a protest meeting took place on Bangalor Square in Minsk, Belarus, on February 14. About 9,000 workers participated in the demonstration. More than 2,000 of them were members of the Belarus Automobile and Agricultural Machinery Workers' Union (AAM).
During the meeting, the AAM president, Aliaksandr Bukhvostau, and a worker from the Borisov Plant of Automobile and Tractor Equipment, Nikolay Pokhabov, made speeches, and participants adopted a resolution entitled "Raise wages up to the level of prices."
An average monthly wage for workers at automobile and agricultural machinery companies in 2000 was 83,245 roubles ($US69), an increase of more than 3 times compared to 1999 when it was 27,290 roubles ($US22). At the same time, purchasing power is in constant and strong decline.
