Read this article in:

7 March, 2002A two-year contract offering improved conditions has been signed at the BHP Billiton-owned nickel mine.

COLOMBIA: After experiencing considerable difficulty in their negotiations to finalise a new collective agreement, the metalworkers' and miners' trade union Utrammicol reports that a deal has been agreed between the union and management at the Cerro Matoso nickel mine, in northern Colombia. When the union and the 600 workers at the BHP Billiton-owned mine threatened strike action over their demands for better working conditions, the company, which is financially viable, finally decided to change its position.
The two-year contract contains important improvements with regard to wages, health, education and job security.
On January 30, the IMF had informed its affiliates about the difficult situation at the nickel mine, and requested solidarity support with the workers and their trade union.
Cerro Matoso workers and Utrammicol have expressed their appreciation to the IMF and its affiliates for their interventions.
