25 October, 1999The joint one-day strike campaign coordinated by the IMF's Brazilian affiliates gets results.

BRAZIL: The series of one-day strikes organised jointly by the CNM-CUT and CNTM-Força Sindical in auto assembly and parts plants throughout Brazil are continuing. On Wednesday, October 20, some six thousand workers at the Renault, Volkswagen Audi and Volvo plants in Curitiba, State of Paraná, downed their tools during a 24-hour work stoppage. Their primary goal - to get the employers to sign a collective agreement - was achieved late that same day. The settlement includes a reduction of the workweek from 44 to 36 hours, a wage increase of 10% and elimination of the Saturday shift.
Altogether, the joint union campaign, which began in late September, intends to mobilise 90,000 assembly factory workers and 165,000 workers in parts plants, in all states of Brazil with auto assembly and parts plants.
