40-hour workweek for Korea

KOREA, REP: The ICFTU's Asia and Pacific Regional Organisation reports that on October 23, 2000, the Tripartite Consultative Committee, which groups representatives of the Korean government, employers and labour, adopted an agreement to reduce the workweek from 44 hours to 40 hours and introduce the five-day workweek as early as the year 2002.
According to this agreement, the public shares the consensus on the need to reduce working hours in order to improve the quality of life for Korean workers and give a boost to national competiveness.
The Committee is also looking into the possibility of expanding leisure facilities, education and training programmes.
