Brazilian power workers' leader Aldanir Carlos dos Santos was murdered last Saturday, the 20-million-strong International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) has learned.

Dos Santos was President of the Rio de Janeiro power workers' union SINTERGIA and a leader of the Brazilian union confederation CUT. He was also on the board of the power utility Light.

The ICEM and its affiliated unions have asked Brazil's federal justice minister to ensure full investigation of "this barbarous crime" and "the immediate identification and punishment of those reponsible."

News of the murder was given to trade unionists from all continents attending ICEM industry conferences in Bangkok this week. They expressed their shock and disgust over the killing, and sent their condolences to Dos Santos' family and SINTERGIA.
